\nIn light of some of the group dynamics I mentioned to you that play out in the 'cricket' group, I was thinking it might be useful if next time I work with them, we can pause to have a discussion and make some written lists of expectations that the group has for working together cooperatively, as well as expectations that each person must have in order to participate in the group most successfully. I'm sensing there is some lack of understanding in terms of expectations and what it looks like to work with in a group--to be a productive group member. I want RT and DC to hold themselves more accountable to the 'group' and figure out what they need to do as individuals to make this happen. I think by having a whole group discussion it could help to brainstorm and explicitly name qualities\/habits that good working groups have, and also explicitly name qualities\/habits that individuals must embrace for the betterment of the group.

\nAs for this week, do you have parent conferences all day on Tuesday starting from 8:30 until 3? Do you think it would be best for me to come in for the first half or the second half of the day? I'm flexible either way. Then if it's ok with you I was thinking of coming in Wednesday, possibly just through the morning until the kids go to lunch, or possibly the whole day until 2:45 (leaving at that time to get to analysis by 3:30). Then Thursday I would still come 11-3:15 as usual.

\nWhatever works for you will work for me. And I will be there tomorrow for a full day, as usual. Should I prepare something for a shared reading? Did you finish November?

\nFor shared reading, we are going to be on "Day 2" of The Tiger. I will post the poem and you can plan to take them through a second day. We just did some general noticing on Friday. It's very different from other poems they have read thus far, but they enjoyed it and made some good observations.
\nDon't worry too much about planning Day 2 without having taught Day One. Use your same planning format. See you tomorrow!

\nJust to debrief a bit more on today's reading group session...this is the first time I'm really involved in this type of teaching so it's quite a new experience for me. I do enjoy it, and would love to observe strategies you use in action when conferencing with kids and their books.

\nYesterday we read chapter 5 and the kids were supposed to read chapter 6 for homework. Neither R. nor D. had read chapter 6, and since W. wasn't here yesterday I decided to re-read chapter 5 all together first, and then read chapter 6. That probably caused things to take longer than it should have.
\n
\nIn any event, I knew that chapter 6 was important for a number of reasons...not only the introduction of Sai Fong and his way of speaking, but also the story he tells about the Hsi Shuai...I didn't want this to get lost on them but I'm pretty sure it did...I was able to confer with D. individually before he packed up his things at the end of the day to clarify what the story of Hsi Shuai was generally about, but R. and W. were not privy to that.

\nI think what you said about having them listen to the audio version of it would be good...the kids had trouble reading the dialect as well as comprehending what it would translate to in 'proper english.'
\n
\nAnother thing that happens when I work with them is R. gets very silly and starts talking about fantastical far-fetched scenarios that could be happening in the book and\/or will happen in the book--definitely not based on context clues, inferences, logical predictions, etc., but more like going a bit wild with his imagination in a sort of stream of consciousness way. Both W. and D. addressed this with him today...it definitely takes the discussion off task. Have you seen this from him?

\nI will speak with R. He seems to be pushing his boundaries a bit more when out of (my) range. And I will also talk to the kids about consequences for not reading chapters that have been assigned.

\nMy "reading group" structure is very loose right now. I will tighten it up soon. What I want you to think about right now is ways that you can collect some data on this group, and I recommend using the TAP \/ Beck questioning strategies for your work with this group. It's all about comprehension right now.

\nI also think that the wiki discussion forums can serve as our "mentor-mentee" log. Therefor, our communication about the classroom should be posted to the wiki. One thing I'd like to ask is that you refer to students by their initials.

\nAs far as using the wiki, just make sure that for whatever page you are working on and posting things to you go to the "Notify" tab and enable the notifications. Also, always click on the "Monitor this topic" box.

\nThe lesson plan worked nicely I think\u2026I felt like I worked through it enough times beforehand and gave a lot of careful thought to the kind of questions I would ask, keeping in mind a particular focus on using the text to inspire questions and having the questions build on each other to help the students build meaning throughout the book. I felt like I stopped a lot to ask questions, and this might have somewhat disturbed the flow of the the book, but in these beginning stages of teaching I think it\u2019s important that I cover too much as opposed to too little, and then as I gain more experience I can pare down where appropriate.
\n
\nI learned a lot! Mostly I learned just how sensitive and thoughtful the students can be, but I also learned that they were able to pick up on some of the big ideas even before they came up in the story. For instance, Lesley predicted that they moved to New York because the parents probably needed to find work, and Genesis predicted that by the end of the book, Angelina would come to like her new home.

\nI'm trying to plan my shared reading lesson and I was going to start by asking the students what they're noticing about the words...is that too vague? Should I be more specific? Also, should I read it through first before we even start talking about the poem and\/or do an echo read first? I know that the first part of a shared reading should start pretty broad and then gradually gain focus over the course of the lessons...should I start with giving some relevant background information about Updike? Should I link it up to the September poem?

\nI uploaded some of the Shared Reading materials that I put up on mycourses for Summer Prep onto the wiki. Please check them out. Day One in the cycle (which is often 3-5 days, depending on poem and available time). You would start this poem the same way I did with September and Things, by reading it and having them follow along with eyes and ears. They can notice the overall meaning,how the poet feels about his subject.... Day Two can get more into the poet, and connections they might have to him. We can talk about Days Two and beyond when we plan on Monday.For Day One, just read the poem , discuss "First Glance" understandings, and then have them echo read with you to wrap up.
