I just uploaded a rough draft idea of an activity for the 'doing math' lesson. Please see what you think. I'm really not sure if this is going in a feasible direction (and I haven't checked any of the numbers yet to see if it would even work, but that will come later). I'm mostly concerned with whether this is backtracking too much to previous work with arrays and not enough with the current multiplication work they've been doing. In any event, before I write a lesson plan I wanted to run this by you for feedback. If it's possible sometime today, I'd love to get your feedback about the direction I'm going with this.

Thanks! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

What do you think of the kids playing a couple rounds of "Rio" tomorrow for my memorization lesson? I found it in the Schuster book and there is a gameboard template in the reproducibles. Have you played it before? Basically there is a game board (a 3 x 4 array) that two students use to play against each other. Each student gets 5 chips but different colors so they can tell theirs apart. One student rolls two dice...adds up the sum, and then multiplies that by the number at the top of their gameboard. Once they get the answer they put their chip on that spot on the board. Then the next person rolls and does the same thing. If they land on their opponent's spot, they knock their chip off. The first person to place all 5 chips on the board wins.

The point of this would be to practice multiplication tables--starting with one table and then switching to another table for the next round, etc.

I could foresee something like this working with this group. What do you think?

For this lesson I had three goals. The first was math-related in that I wanted students to practice the variety of multiplication strategies they’ve been using and apply them to story problems. The second and third goals were meta-cognitive—one was intended to get the students thinking about the benefits, challenges, strengths, and weaknesses of using the different multiplication strategies, and one was intended to get the students thinking about group work—what worked well, what didn’t work well, and what could be improved.

I think the lesson succeeded in at least partially meeting all of the goals. Each student had a different comfort level with the multiplication strategies and part of my thought process in having students work in heterogeneous groups was to encourage stronger students to take some responsibility to help students who were less clear. Perhaps this is something that could have been more explicitly taught/modeled if it’s something that I wanted to encourage during group work. Otherwise, how or why would stronger students know to help others? And how or why would less strong students want to accept the help of their peer instead of the teacher? I asked students to try to work at the same pace but I gave them no suggestions for how this could be accomplished in math work. This is something that I will need to grapple with if I choose to believe that this is a valuable component of group work—maybe not all the time, but sometimes. I’m not totally sure. Sometimes I worry that this will hold stronger students back. But then again, having to find the words to use to help others with the work is also a valuable lesson and helps reinforce the concepts for those students in the teaching of it. Nonetheless, as I walked around the room I was able to observe the majority of students on the right track with each of the strategies. It seemed that the chunking algorithm, the FOIL algorithm, and the traditional algorithm were much more consistently accurate in terms of getting the correct answer. There was some confusion with the starter problem strategy in terms of how it could be used to make the math easier or more efficient. The majority of those students who chose to use it when they had a choice wrote that it was the easiest/fastest/most efficient strategy but then did not use it in ways that made it any easier/faster/efficient than the other algorithms. They still used the traditional algorithm to solve the starter problem, which was counterproductive. I found this to be very interesting.

As for the goal of having students think about the good and not-so-good points of using the different strategies, not everyone had a chance to fill out their chart but during our class discussion I was able to gain some insight into their thinking (although not nearly as much as I could have). I wanted students to discuss which strategy was best for which story problem (not that there was necessarily any ‘right’ strategy to use)—but to consider why using one strategy for one problem and another strategy for another problem might have been most efficient based on the numbers they had to work with.

Finally, as for the goal of thinking about group work, I was also able to have them flesh this out a bit during our group discussion and it was good to hear what was working well and what was a challenge for them. I wanted them to practice working in groups, but noted resistance from at least four or five students in the process of doing this. Some kids wanted to work faster than everyone else, some were not using their words to confer with others, some were feeling left out because it was taking them longer, and I noticed one child impatiently trying to tell a group-mate what to write on his paper after I asked her if she could check in and support her group mate who was not working as quickly as her. This created a bit of tension among some kids…something that I acknowledge can be an important learning experience, but not necessarily helpful in the task of doing math. I think next time I would probably have them work in pairs rather than groups of 4/5 so that they can still practice a modified version of group work without losing sight of the math at hand.

In general I was pleased with the way the students interacted with the math work and how they expressed their thoughts in writing and aloud.
Jenna,

Your reflection on your math lesson is good. You raise important points on what worked well and where you saw some challenges. I agree with you on the group work challenges. I also noticed the same concerns with the students' emerging understanding of the starter problem strategy, as well as the way many are using the traditional algorithm first, rather than as a way to check. I thought you did a very nice job of leading them through this lesson, and I think you should use your reflection to help guide your planning for your subsequent math lessons.
Jenna,

The following is the rough plan I proposed to Susie for the four lessons I have to teach. What do you think of some of this? I clearly want whatever I teach to be in-line with the lessons that need to be taught, and then somehow fit them into the four levels of cognitive demand. Another thing is that not all lessons need to be whole class, so this could help in terms of giving us flexibility in planning when and what I teach.

Preliminary Plan:

Memorization: For this component I was thinking of doing a math game dealing with automaticity of addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts. I was thinking of maybe doing a variation on “First to 15” but using either just multiplication, or a combination of addition and multiplication…and changing it to “First to 50,” or “First to 75.”

Procedural Without Connections: Perhaps for this I could do a math string?

Procedural With Connections: Maybe some kind of number clues lesson? I know they struggled with how to do these earlier this fall but maybe it would be a good opportunity to bring it back?

Doing Math: Maybe it could be some kind of lesson where the kids have to figure out how to organize and design a whole class graphic novel that would incorporate what they know about arrays, multiplication, etc. thus far?

I feel a bit overwhelmed by the fact that there are only two weeks left to accomplish all of this...It would be great to figure out a manageable plan for when I should do these lessons!

The memorization, procedural, and procedural with connections suggestions are all very "do-able" and easy to implement. The book I loaned you on math enrichment is a good resource for teaching story problems (look in the multiplication and division chapter, and on the cd).

I just uploaded a draft of interview questions I will need to ask 2 students (one at the higher end of math comprehension and one at the lower end).
