I'm in the process of writing the lesson plan for The Princess Knight. I was wondering how much you want me to or think I should get into the genre of fairy tales with them as opposed to fantasy. Didn't you say you'd be launching more of a fantasy-type of study with them? I did some research and noticed that Lucy Calkins does address ways to incorporate things like looking at archetypes and allegory in fairy tales. I was wondering if I should go in that kind of direction or keep it less specific to the genre and more focused on the story line or the 'moral of the story.' Do you have any thoughts about that?

We are going to launch it with The Princess Knight and The Paperbag Princess and the focus for this will be on the setting. Specifically, fantasy readers use multiple cuing systems to research the settings of their stories and the impact of those settings.

How about this..... what if I read aloud The Paperbag Princess on Monday, and you read The Princess Knight on Tuesday? We can look at how mine goes on Monday, and stay after school to use that to finalize your plans.

In general, you should look at the gender issues raised in The Princess Knight and think about places to stop and discuss. Let me know your thoughts.

Do you like the book?

I am happy to read it with the class. Your suggestions are very helpful to think about--looking at gender issues sounds like a great plan. I'm fine with doing this lesson on Tuesday instead of tomorrow. Whatever works for you is perfect.

Do you want me to prepare a poem for shared reading tomorrow? And what about working in a math 'memorization' lesson for tomorrow or Tuesday? I'm thinking something quick/small group involving a game or something--like a warm up of multiplication facts or something (maybe 15 minutes in total). What do you think?

Moving forward, I will still need to do one more math lesson: 'doing math' which we can discuss tomorrow after school if that's ok.

I also want to figure out how and when to wind things down with the kids. :( When I talked to Jen the other day, she seemed concerned that if I stay on with your class too much longer, then I won't have time to work on the many big projects I have for all of my classes--as well as make time to do more classroom observations. I recognize there is a tension there, but I also know that I really love being in the classroom environment and given my own separation anxiety issues, I have been subconsciously avoiding the inevitable. Given all of these things, I'm thinking that I would like to come back the week after Thanksgiving but that perhaps (as much as I don't want it to be), that should be my last full week. :( What do you think?

We can talk more tomorrow.

I’m realizing that there are so many lenses through which I can structure my line of questioning based on the goals and objectives I have for students. Ultimately I want students to comprehend the text, but with that I am learning strategies that will also help them look more closely at different elements of text—and in his example I wanted the kids to work with character study.

What was effective? What did you learn? What would you change for tomorrow or the next time you will use this plan?

10.19.11

I think the lesson plan was prepared thoughtfully and thoroughly through a combination of time spent with the process, feedback, and revision. I’ve noticed how my plan becomes more refined and focused by taking it from a first draft to a second draft. Just building familiarity with read aloud strategies and spending more and more time with the text has been very helpful.

For this read aloud, one of my goals was to begin thinking about character development. I wanted the students to think about how the character changes from the beginning of the book to the end, and what specifically contributes to this change. I also wanted them to consider whether the old woman’s actions or decisions throughout the book seemed to make sense for her character, or whether they were out of character. I think this was a good way to keep the objective in the students’ minds as we read.

Another goal was to keep the discussion very evidence and text based. I wanted students to practice this, especially in light of how I observe you (Maureen) holding them to noting their evidence during other read alouds, as well as reading about how effective it can be for building comprehension (in articles by Beck, Kucan, etc.) I have a more heightened awareness for this strategy now which will only help me in future read alouds.

This was my first time doing a ‘stop and jot’ and I really like the possibilities that it creates for student interaction. I think that if I were a kid, this strategy would have really appealed to me because writing my ideas down has often come more naturally than speaking up during whole class discussions. I would definitely like to try a ‘stop and jot’ again at some point in the future. I think it could have maybe been organized or modeled slightly better than how I did it, and I will think about this for next time. I also think that the ‘turn and talk’ and ‘share’ that followed the ‘stop and jot’ could have been organized more effectively for the purposes of assessment. These are things I will consider for the future.
Hi Maureen,

It was helpful to get your advice prior to doing it that I should focus more on character development and not forget to include the teacher/policeman in my line of questioning. By having them think about the different kinds of people in the community who did not support Ikarus, it made his plight that much more unjust.

I learned that 5th graders in general, and these 5th graders in particular, are really able to think critically and carefully about text, storylines, and deep meaning. They have a great deal of empathy and compassion, and are mature enough to handle very serious topics. Sometimes I think that students say things to try to ‘please’ their teacher or answer in ways that they think their teacher wants to hear, but with these kids, I really feel like they are very authentic in their answers and responses to characters, plot, etc. and in the positive and negative qualities they perceive, in the injustices that they see, and in the way that characters navigate the world in stories. This speaks to a level of maturity and seriousness that is not always evidenced in their physical behaviors. I love this dichotomy.

One thing that was revealed to me that I had not even consciously realized myself, was the way that the narrator starts off as the quiet one and by the end she’s using her voice to stand up to the mean kids. I am very impressed that one of the students noticed this and brought it to my attention. It is definitely something I would focus on in planning my lesson next time. Another realization was the point in which Ikarus lands heavily on the roof…this stands in stark contrast to the levity he feels before children start to tease him. I would also focus on this idea more if I were to do this lesson again. I would like to dig a little deeper into these metaphors next time.
Your reflections hit on the big ideas of both 5th graders at this age/stage of development .......the contrast in physical behaviors vs maturity in thinking, their compassion, etc....
