Initial Design Lesson Reflection

In reflecting on how my Initial Design art lesson today, I’m reminded about how much I still have to work on in terms of my preparation, my ‘teaching’ and my conclusion to lessons. I’m still trying to find my rhythm and get more comfortable with leading the entire class at once. I know that my interactions with students one-on-one or in small groups is much more focused and ‘feels’ better to me in terms of what I’m able to communicate to them, and what they’re able to express and/or internalize in turn. I feel more authentic in these moments and less like I’m trying to be a “teacher.” Sometimes (not always though) when I’m talking to the entire class I feel like I’m playing the role of teacher and not being as natural and authentic as I want to be. Does that make sense?

I did prepare for today’s lesson and knew that for this first go around, you did not want me to come up with any formal plans. I appreciate that as I think it made me feel a bit less pressure to be perfect and felt like I was sort of restarting my teacher engine from where we left off in Summer Prep. Despite this, I now think I should have had more specific statements or questions that I could refer to in the moment to guide me as I described the activity. Sometimes when I talk in front of the whole group (and this could be accurate or it could be exaggerated) I feel like my thoughts sometimes begin to ramble or lose focus. The last thing I want to do is make any of the kids confused or disinterested, ever. I also tend to feel a nervousness/adrenaline when talking with the whole group that may make me feel like my brain is working slightly out of sync with my mouth. It’s hard to know what’s reality and what’s my self-critical nature. In general, I want to be more clear-headed and confident in the moment without feeling distracted by myself—I want to be present, authentic, and also aware of timing and my own personal transitions within a lesson. I have no idea how much time it took to present the lesson…and that’s probably not a good thing.

I was happy to see how engaged almost everyone was in the lesson. I loved what they had to say when I presented my examples (both my in-the-moment sketches and my finished squares). They were really thoughtful, insightful, and making many keen observations that let me know they were really looking and thinking about what I made. I was hoping to channel this energy and this creative way they were thinking about my work, into making their own work.

The designs they made were amazing. I can really see each of their personalities represented in their work and this is fascinating to me. I think it was good to keep the piece of paper small because it made the activity more focused and manageable given the time we had to do it in. I would definitely do this activity again, with some fine-tuning.
I feel more authentic in these moments and less like I’m trying to be a “teacher.” Sometimes (not always though) when I’m talking to the entire class I feel like I’m playing the role of teacher and not being as natural and authentic as I want to be. Does that make sense?"

It does make a lot of sense, given where you are in your development. It takes a while to get comfortable with a "teacher voice" and with working with larger groups of students. I also feel that way, at times. When I am conferring, I feel I can have more intimacy with the student and it creates an opportunity to connect in ways that you cannot when working with the whole class.

That said, kids also have expectations for how teachers work with them in whole class situations, and are probably more comfortable with "that role." You have a very calm and controlled demeanor, and I would encourage you to work from your own strengths. There will be times when you will need to use your voice differently to get everyone's attention, or use a certain signal, and that will come.

Your reflections in the second paragraph reflect the newness of whole class teaching. I did not see you "ramble" and I think the kids appreciated that you genuinely worked this lesson out to share it with them. They felt respected, sand that was evident. I like you to have a teaching experience like this one (low stakes, low risk) because it connects you with the kids and it also provides you an opportunity to reflect on lesson planning in general. You have learned some things through teaching this lesson that will help you think about future lessons differently.

As for timing and pacing, a goal I have for you is to break a lesson down into its components and to time them. We can work on this. What's very important is to get the kids to understand this, as well.

I agree with you regarding the small paper. I thought it worked well.

I would love to work in some weekly art project activities, where you plan them using a planning template and fine tune your lessons. We can talk more about this, but I think there are valuable lessons to learn about yourself and the children through these kids of teaching and learning experiences.

Jenna, you prepared and presented a very nice art activity lesson today, and you should feel good about what you accomplished with the children. You also established yourself as a teacher in the classroom, and that is important. Congratulations!

Best,
